Immune system finding paves way for vaccine use in
some leukemia, lymphoma cancers - Medical researchers have
found that a vaccine can help activate a patient's immune system and help it
to fight against mantle cell lymphoma, even if the patient has very few B
cells. (18 August, 2005)

Bendamustine Plus Rituximab Is Effective and Has a
Favorable Toxicity Profile in the Treatment of Mantle Cell and Low-Grade
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma - A combination of rituximab
and bendamustine used as maintenance therapy was highly effective against
mantle cell and low-grade lymphoma. (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 20 May, 2005)

Rituximab maintenance following a Rituximab containing
chemotherapy significantly prolongs the duration of response in patients
with relapsed follicular and mantle cell lymphomas: Results of a prospective
randomized trial of the German Low Grade Lymphoma Study Group (GLSG)
- This report, presented at 2005's Annual Meeting of the American Society of
Clinical Oncologists (ASCO), is the first to show that, based on clinical
trials data, rituximab is proving to be effective as a maintenance therapy
in mantle cell lymphoma patients. The use of rituximab for maintenance
therapy is a key theme in The Patient from Hell. (May, 2005)

Immunochemotherapy With Rituximab and Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin,
Vincristine, and Prednisone Significantly Improves Response and Time to
Treatment Failure, But Not Long-Term Outcome in Patients With Previously
Untreated Mantle Cell Lymphoma: Results of a Prospective Randomized Trial of
the German Low Grade Lymphoma Study Group (GLSG) - This
study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, also finds that
Rituxan plus CHOP was "significantly superior to CHOP in terms of overall
response rate." The authors advocate "novel strategies in remission" (e.g.,
maintenance therapy) to prolong the initial success of R-CHOP. (Journal of
Clinical Oncology, 20 March, 2005)
-
Phase II Trial of Individualized Rituximab Dosing for
Patients With CD20-Positive Lymphoproliferative Disorders -
This research paper supports other published studies on maintenance
therapies using rituximab. The authors conclude that a "rational maintenance
strategy" would be a rituximab dose every 3 to 4 months. (Journal of
Clinical Oncology, 20 February, 2005)

Stepping Out of Your own Shadow: A Didactic Example of
How Facing Uncertainty Can Improve Decision-Making -
This research paper supports other published studies on maintenance
therapies using rituximab. The authors conclude that a "rational maintenance
strategy" would be a rituximab dose every 3 to 4 months. (Journal of
Clinical Oncology, 20 February, 2005)

Maximizing Therapeutic Benefit of Rituximab:
Maintenance Therapy Versus Re-Treatment at Progression in Patients With
Indolent Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma -- A Randomized Phase II Trial of the Minnie
Pearl Cancer Research Network - Based on studies of
114 patients, researchers compare the benefits of rituximab as maintenance
therapy versus rituximab for re-treatment. While duration of benefit is
similar among the two groups, in the patients receiving maintenance therapy,
"progression-free survival was prolonged." (Journal of
Clinical Oncology, 20 February, 2005)

Mantle Cell Lymphoma: At Last, Some Hope for
Successful Innovative Treatment Strategies - Richard
Fisher of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester, NY, reviews recent
advances made in mantle cell lymphoma and emphasizes the importance of
clinical trials. As noted in The Patient from Hell, clinical trials
are important, but patients cannot rely on them alone when seeking
treatment, as many of the most effective treatments have not yet undergone
clinical trials. (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 1 February, 2005)
