Market Forces Cited in Lymphoma Drugs' Disuse
- New York Times writer Alex Berenson discusses why Bexxar and
Zevalin, two lymphoma drugs that have had high response rates in lymphoma
patients, have not been used as widely as they should. Because the drugs
typically must be administered by academic hospitals, doctors have little
financial incentive to use the drug and may not be knowledgeable on its
proven effectiveness. (14 July, 2007)

Drug Disaster -
In an article written for the Wall Street Journal, Richard Miller - husband
of Schneider's oncologist Sandra Horning, CEO of Pharmacyclics, and adjunct
professor of oncology at Stanford Medical Center - derides the Food & Drug
Administration's rejection of Provenge, which was developed by Dendreon to
fight prostate cancer, and suggests it is a sign of larger problems with the

Rituximab-CHOP Versus CHOP Alone or With Maintenance
Rituximab in Older Patients With Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma
- In a study by Dr. Horning and colleagues, it is found that Rituxan plus
CHOP, the treatment Schneider received, was more effective than CHOP alone
in treating patients 60 years and older with B-cell lymphoma. Encouragingly,
the conclusion suggests the need for studies examining Rituxan for
maintenance therapy, exactly what Schneider has negotiated for his own
disease. (Journal of Clinical Oncology, July, 2006)
